The Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary will host its next low-cost spay/neuter clinic for cats on Sunday, April 15, at the Leilani Estates Activity Center on Moku Street.

The Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary will host its next low-cost spay/neuter clinic for cats on Sunday, April 15, at the Leilani Estates Activity Center on Moku Street.

The fee will be $25 for a feral cat, and $45 for a domestic kitty, said spokeswoman Cheryl Curtis. To register for the clinic, please call 982-5110 or 990-6105.

Rainbow Friends, an all-volunteer nonprofit sanctuary in Kurtistown, exists because of the generosity and support of island animal lovers.

Hoku Award winner Lee Eisenstein will perform a benefit concert for Rainbow Friends at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, at the East Hawaii Cultural Center in downtown Hilo.

Eisenstein is a virtuoso classical guitarist with worldwide reviews. General admission is $12, with students and EHCC members paying only $10.

“For more details, and to purchase tickets for this exciting event, please call us at the sanctuary at 982-5110,” said fellow volunteer Kathy Skea.

Rainbow Friends is always in need of volunteers to walk dogs, cuddle kittens, scoop poop, clean, build, or otherwise maintain and improve the lives of sanctuary residents.

Every volunteer will be given a short interview and an initial orientation. These are held every Monday at 2 p.m. Here you will be given a tour of the property, shown the best way to enter/exit dog kennels, be given some dog-walking training, and shown the regimen for scooping and cleaning catteries.

If there are other areas of interest to you, this can be discussed. Further training will be given as needed. Sessions generally last between one and a half to two hours.

Volunteers are reminded that, when it rains, the property can become quite muddy. Please wear old clothes that you do not mind getting dirty, including long pants and covered shoes or boots — definitely not slippers — for your own comfort and safety. It’s also important to wear sunscreen and to bring lots of water to drink.

Please call the shelter in advance to register for an interview/orientation session.

Raibow Friends currently is home to 85 dogs and 230 cats. Most of these animals are up for adoption, and all are available to sponsor. To see photos of the animals, and find out about them, please visit www.rainbowfriends.org.
